Community Outreach

The goal of outreach is to increase access of supportive services for cancer patients and their families. Creating a greater sense of awareness of the Center is accomplished through a variety of marketing strategies. Outreach efforts include calling on community groups, senior centers, religious organizations, libraries and park districts. Visiting hospitals and teaching health care professionals about the Center is tantamount to the program and reinforces the value of psychological support as a compliment to medical care. Volunteers play a vital role in these outreach efforts.

Corporate
Support is critical when an employee is living with cancer and trying to maintain a job, keep medical appointments and deal with the challenges that often accompany compromised health. Cancer can have a profound impact within the work setting, even if the employee is the caretaker for a cancer survivor. The psychosocial aspects of chronic illness and the legal ramifications are challenging issues that need to be addressed in the workplace. The Cancer Wellness Center is a viable resource for businesses. Onsite seminars are available including the topics Issues in the Workplace: Cancer, Chronic Illness, Confidentiality and The psychosocial and Legal Aspects of Chronic Illness in the Workplace. Materials and introductory packets can be provided.

Classroom
Cancer doesn’t affect just one person; it usually impacts the whole family and can certainly resonate in a school community. For the past decade the Cancer Wellness Center has been a resource for schools by hosting professional conferences and by offering counsel and advice to staff in situations of crisis around illness and loss. Having formed an Educational Advisory Committee in the spring of 2007, the intention is for committee members to schedule programs on-site at district meetings, as inservices, and/or to PTO’s. Potential topics are: Loss and its Impact on the School-aged Child, The Impact of Cancer and Chronic Illness on the Family, and The Return to School Post-Treatment. A place that supports individuals, couples, families and children, the Center is focusing on reaching out to professionals at their place of work.

Health Care
The Center’s programming compliments a person’s medical care. The lifechanging words ‘you have cancer’ often result in a great deal of stress and anxiety both to the person diagnosed with cancer and their family. The Center becomes a haven where patients and families can begin to explore their ‘new normal’. The supportive programs offered at the Center address these psychological stressors directly and help to transform feelings of hopelessness, aloneness and lack of control. Cancer Wellness Center materials are sent to area hospitals and physician offices. Recent initiatives include volunteer staffing in cancer center lobbies whereby Center participants share their positive experiences with cancer patients and their families. Off-site programming, consisting of clinical programs as well as programs providing information about the Center, is available and helps professionals understand this valuable resource. The Center’s stories of empowerment reinforce the value of providing structure and meaning to an otherwise difficult situation, making its emotional effects more manageable. We appreciate the referrals from the medical community.
